• Remove the Headliner: The first step is to carefully remove the car’s existing headliner fabric. This requires detaching the headliner board from the roof, usually by removing trim pieces and other interior components.
• Choose Fiber Optic Placement: The installer will plan out the layout of the fiber optic strands. This typically involves deciding how many stars or constellations you want, and where they will be placed.
• Drill Small Holes: Small holes are drilled in the headliner board where each fiber optic strand will be inserted. The number of holes can range from a few hundred to in the thousands, depending on the desired effect.
• Insert the Fibers into the Holes: Each fiber optic strand is pushed through the drilled holes in the headliner. The fiber ends are placed flush with the surface, creating the “star” effect visible on the roof. The fibers are often trimmed to create a smooth, even look.
• Power and Connect the LEDs: The light box or fiber optic lighting system is wired to the vehicle’s electrical system, ensuring that it powers on and off with the car’s interior lights or via a separate control. It’s usually mounted in a discreet location (like the trunk or under the seats).
